An act of contrition is a Christian prayer genre that expresses sorrow for sins. It may be used in a liturgical service or be used privately, especially in connection with an examination of conscience. Special formulas for acts of contrition are in use in the Anglican, Catholic, Lutheran, Methodist and Reformed Churches. The Catholic Church does not restrict the term "act of contrition" to any one formula. The ''Catechism of the Catholic Church'' notes that "Among the penitent’s acts, contrition occupies first place. Contrition is 'sorrow of the soul and detestation for the sin committed together with the resolution not to sin again.' When it arises from a love by which God is loved above all else, contrition is called ‘perfect’ (contrition of charity).
